Famous for its important archaeological sites, Sovana is located a few kilometres from Pitigliano and houses one of the largest and wealthiest necropolis in Tuscany. The town is mainly concentrated around the main square, known as the Piazza del Pretorio, where you’ll find the most important monuments in the town.
The history of Sovana is strongly linked to the Etruscans who, in ancient times, colonized the land and built villages and settlements. After the Romans and during the Middle Ages, the village was ruled by the Aldobrandeschi, the Orsini and finally the city of Florence and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
In Sovana, also famous for being the birthplace of Pope Gregory VII, is the holy Peter and Paul Church, the Palace of the Praetorian, the Loggia del Capitano, the Bourbon-Monte Palace, seat of the town’s governors, the Church Santa Maria Maggiore and the ruins of the ancient church dedicated to St. Mamiliano.
