Famous in Etruscan times for its extraordinary waters and their healing properties, Saturnia was founded by the Romans in the immediate vicinity of Via Clodia and for centuries enjoyed a great importance both socially and economically.

Subsequently, the town saw the domination of the Aldobrandeschi, the Orsini of Pitigliano, the Republic of Siena and the Medici of Florence, before being annexed to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
